Foooood and Markets and Germans?

Lacey and I slept pretty well considering we were basically sleeping on plywood. We had blanket issues (turns out we had it turned the wrong way….) so we alternated being cold through the night.

After more food debating (this is one of the most frustrating parts of traveling, deciding where to eat), we decided to get some croissants at a chain bakery. They were sooooo good. We love our carbs.

Our first stop of the day was Chatuchak Weekend Market. It’s one of the biggest markets in all of Southeast Asia. There are 1000’s of stalls of people selling all sorts of things. We took the BTS Sky Train (above ground, modern subway). It was very efficient and pretty cheap. Simply by chance, we got to the market just a little bit after it opened so it wasn’t all that busy. We walked around A LOT. Lacey ended up buying a pair of sandals. The market reminded me of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, lots of stalls and tight quarters in the walkways. Another comparison: it’s like Mall of America but a smaller area and more shops.

The most fun part of the whole experience was all the food stalls there. You’ve got to check out the pictures of me eating squid. The tentacles tasted pretty good but the rest of the meat was kind of rubbery (needed a little more cooking in opinion). Lacey had some “water apples”. We shared a big chunk of fried chicken that was awesome. It was just fun to walk around the try all these different kinds of food. I won’t go into the details but I think our stomachs didn’t like the adventurous stuff very much haha.

Anywaysssss, We left the market a couple of hours later and there were SO MANY PEOPLE there. It was absolutely packed getting in and walking around. We were very lucky to go as early as we did.

Our next stop was a different kind of market, Siam Paragon. It’s a HUGE department store inside of a modern shopping mall. There are lots of luxury brands in the mall. Even some car dealerships are there! We walked around and happened to find a “Happy Potter Christmas” Exhibit. We walked through and I took pictures of the Thai translated books to show my sister when we get back. The mall and all the people were draining us so we rested in a McDonalds for a few minutes. Without any other ideas of places to go or things to see, we went back to the hostel and napped.

Our stomachs started to grumble so we ventured out for our last “Dinner Indecision” time. This is the time when we would aimlessly walk around and try to decide what to eat. It’s not great haha. However, tonight our indecision led to one of the best meals we had on the trip. We went to a restaurant called G’s. Now this is going to sound weird and I get why people would be confused but it’s a German restaurant. Yes, we spent the last night in Thailand eating German food. But oh man was it freaking delicious German food.

The owner was standing on the patio outside in a small alley with lights all hung up and restaurants all over. It was a perfect setting with perfect weather. The owner talked to us like we were old friends. I ordered a very, very large beer in a mug and Lacey got some cider. For food, we got a G’s Grilled Platter for 2. It had Wienerschnitzel, 2 kinds of sausage, pork belly, and home fries. I’m telling you, this was some of the best food I have eaten in a long time. I’ve never had Wienerschnitzel before and it tasted fantastic with some mustard. The sausages were both tasty. We could have eaten a huge plate of the home fries. Needless to say, it was a weird last meal for Southeast Asia but it was incredible.

We finished our dinner and headed back to the hostel by taking one last walk through the Patpong Night Market. We had loads of people asking us about shows again. We also walked by our favorite fruit stand. It plays a recording of a woman saying “YAAAMMMMEEEE YAAAMMMMEEE DURIAN DURIAN”. Sooooo funny.

We figured out our blanket situation and went to bed. It was bittersweet knowing it was our last night in Thailand. I’ll maybe do a full postmortem at some point but this trip has been more than I ever expected as far as highs and lows and memories we’ll always have with us.

Tomorrow… Heading back home!
