Hiking Day 2 - Gozo Island

Image
We were pretty exhausted from our hike the day before along the coast of Malta but we were ready for another day. This time our plan was to go to a small island just north of Malta called Comino. In the normal summer time, many people take day cruises to Comino. The boats visit the Blue Lagoon along the coast of Comino. People swim and drink and hang out in this area. Well, it's not summer. So our plan was to take a ferry from the top of Malta to this small island and then hike around. This would require a long bus ride so we wanted to get a decently early start again. We went and got breakfast from the restaurant attached to the hotel again. I got banana and honey pancakes this time. Lacey got the same omelet and toast. The bus was pretty uneventful other than it just takes forever. The buses in Malta cover the whole island nicely but they are not super often and they legit stop at EVERY SINGLE stop. The bus from Valletta up to the ferry terminal listed 55 stops and I ...

Hiking Through the Malta Countryside

As discussed in the previous post, Lacey and I had some indecision and concerns about Malta. We had original plans for staying up the coast and renting a scooter or car and then... plans changed. It's funny how things tend to work themselves out though. After quite a bit of research and a team effort of searching for things to do, we found some walks to do on the official Malta website. Lacey and I really enjoy hiking. We've been to Kentucky and Colorado to hike. Also, we had been in big cities for about 10 days straight so we really craved a change of scenery. We woke up a little early (like 7:30am-ish). Our hotel had an excellent breakfast to choose from. I had apple cinnamon pancakes with maple syrup. Holy smokes they were delicious. Lacey had a ham and cheese omelet with toast that was also really, really good. The breakfast was included with the hotel which was great. The Malta website lists 7 different walks but there was one particular hike that we were ...

Sunrise, Temple Fatigue, and Street Food

Image
Our hostel offers two main tours of the Angkor Wat temple complex. We already did the sunset tour on Tuesday and did the sunrise tour today. The sunrise tour includes going to the real jewel of the temple complex, the actual Angkor Wat temple, to watch the sunrise then go to 4 other temples. After that, we would pack up and go back to Bangkok. We were completely exhausted from the motorbike tour yesterday so we went to bed pretty early (like 9pm or something) so we could sleep enough before our very early wake-up call of 4am. For the sunset tour a few days ago, we did a private tour where it was just us and a driver in a tuk-tuk. This tour, we decided to do the super cheap ($12 total) sharing tour for sunrise. We thought we would be getting into a white van with a bunch of other people and driving around to everything. Turns out the sharing tour just means sharing a small tuk-tuk with 2 other people. Needless to say, we wish we would have just done the private tour again. The ...

Cruising Cambodia

Image
We had to wake up kind of early again today because we were going to go for a long motorbike ride in the Cambodian jungle and mountains. We decided the day before to hire a company called Khmer Ways to give us a tour. All of their reviews online were positive and we were excited for an adventure. We didn't know what we were getting in to (both good and bad). Us on our cool rides Time kind of got away from us in the morning so we were rushing to pack up and leave. Our guide was waiting for us in the lobby and he had a tuk-tuk give us a ride over to their place. Their little area is basically a house on the edge of town where they store all their motorbikes. We got on the bikes and drove around their yard for a little bit just doing small oval shapes so we could get a handle on accelerating slowly and braking. After about 15 minutes, we worked our way up to driving down their alleyway which had some obstacles to avoid and a long stretch of road so we could go faster.  ...
