Beach Time and Sickness
Today was supposed to be one of the most exciting and awesome days of our whole trip. We were going to go to our resort on Railay Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Unfortunately, sickness had to play a role.
I work up early in the morning and really did not feel well. I don't know if it was just the flu or the pad thai I ate the night before or what but my stomach was not doing well. We walked around the town for a bit to find some breakfast and ended up getting smoothies. The pier where the boats to Railay left was right by there so we stopped and checked out the scene. We went back to the hostel and I slept for a little bit longer.
The boat ride to Railay was pretty uneventful other than there was a guy who smelled really bad who (of course) sat by us. Major BO. There are 2 main kinds of boats here, long tail boats and speed boats. Long tail boats are long and have a crazy looking motor with a long shaft so they can traverse shallow water easier.
Railay Beach is actually more spectacular in person. Technically, the beach is part of the mainland but with high cliffs on both sides, it functions like an island (everything boated in). We found our resort but couldn't get our room for another 2 hours. We passed the time by walking up and down the beach and getting more smoothies and pancakes for lunch (healthy eating haha).
By the time we got to the room, it was very warm out so we cranked the AC and I rested a while (stomach issues again). Lacey was extremely nice about waiting for me to feel better. After resting, I felt a little better so we walked back over to the beach and took some more pictures. I absolutely love the sound of waves. The sand here is sooo soft too. The beach was extremely crowded during the day but as it transitioned to evening, the crowds started to dissipate.
While walking along the beach, someone kind of yelled at Lacey and it turned out to be the couple from the plane yesterday! Their names are Natasha and Austin and, as I said, she's a 2nd-grade teacher at an international school in Korea and he's a physical therapist. We ended up talking to them for a while and got a drink with them too.
Because of the clouds, the sunset wasn't great but I'm sure it'll be better tomorrow. We ventured out to find some food. Lacey saw a pineapple fried rice dish at a nearby restaurant so we went there. I started to not feel well again and ate white rice (I know, I know. what a waste of being in Thailand). The pineapple rice was very full of spices and didn't agree with me. We made our way back to our room and I took a warm bath to try to help me recover.
As with life in general, things happen that are outside your control and the bout of sickness for me and Lacey just happened to happen when we are in the one place we really wanted to enjoy. I still had fun during the day but it was kind of a bummer to not feel 100%. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better!
